Mother-To-Be

Pregnancy Massage

Nurturing pre-natal and post-natal massage, tailored to you.

‘Pregnancy Massage’ is especially tailored for each mother-to-be, or a mother who has recently given birth. Pre-natal and post-natal massage focuses on soothing and alleviating the physical strains placed on the body, using gentle techniques to relax the muscles of the back, legs and shoulders. Suitable following the first trimester of pregnancy (12 weeks).

Massage during pregnancy

More and more women find that regular massage during pregnancy helps to reduce stress and promote relaxation; provides emotional support; relieves muscle spasms, cramps and general aches; increases circulation and reduces the possibility of varicose veins and swelling in the feet and legs; helps with digestion; and reduces the likelihood of stretch marks. Clients report feeling relaxed and comfortable, with increased self-confidence and an enhanced body image.

Massage during pregnancy should be avoided by women with placental dysfunctions, pre-eclampsia, gestational diabetes, toxaemia or threatened miscarriage. If in any doubt at all, please speak with your doctor before booking.

Massage table set with side lying bolsters for a pregnancy massage at home

From the second trimester onward

Céline treats from twelve weeks. Before that, most therapists including her will ask you to wait, and that is standard practice rather than a judgement about you.

You lie on your side, not face down and not flat on your back. Two firm bolsters do the work: one between the knees, one supporting the upper arm and chest. A third goes under the bump if you want more support.

Sixty minutes costs £55, ninety minutes £80. Travel across the Chilterns is included, which matters more at thirty four weeks than at any other time.

What the treatment focuses on

Lower back and hips, because the centre of gravity has moved and the pelvis is carrying it. Shoulders and upper back, because sleep is broken and you are propped on pillows. Feet and calves, gently, where swelling allows.

Pressure stays moderate throughout. Certain points on the ankles and hands are avoided in pregnancy, and Céline works around them as a matter of routine.

Safety and when to check first

Tell Céline about high blood pressure, pre-eclampsia, a history of early labour, bleeding, or anything your midwife has flagged. In some cases she will ask you to check with your midwife or GP before booking, and she would rather say that on the phone than at your front door.

Céline is fully insured and holds an ITEC Diploma in Holistic Massage. Pregnancy massage is a comfort treatment. Nothing here replaces your antenatal care.

Common questions

Is it safe?

Side lying massage from the second trimester is widely considered safe for a healthy pregnancy. Your midwife is the right person to ask about your own circumstances, and Céline will wait for that answer.

Can I book close to my due date?

Yes. Plenty of clients book at thirty eight and thirty nine weeks. Sleep is worse and the back is heavier, so the treatment tends to be more welcome then than at twenty weeks.

Can my partner be in the room?

Of course. Some people want company and some want an hour alone. Both are fine.

What about after the birth?

Wait six weeks for a straightforward delivery, or until your postnatal check for a caesarean. Then book a normal massage and focus on the shoulders, because you will be carrying and feeding.
